Exploring the Yayoi Kusama Museum in Tokyo: Looking Beyond Infinity
In the bustling heart of Tokyo, where tradition and innovation converge, the name Yayoi Kusama resonates with art enthusiasts worldwide. Known for her mesmerizing dots and boundless creativity, Kusama has left an indelible mark on the art scene. It’s no wonder that visitors to Tokyo are often intrigued by the idea of experiencing her work up close. However, what many don’t expect is the unconventional nature of the Yayoi Kusama Museum. We’ll delve into the question: Is a visit to the Yayoi Kusama Museum in Tokyo truly worth your time during your Tokyo visit?
The Allure of Small Museums
Before diving into my experience at the Yayoi Kusama Museum, it’s worth mentioning that museums in Japan are small. It’s not uncommon for them to house just a few pieces in their collections, and the Yayoi Kusama Museum is no exception. Yet, don’t let its size deceive you; it holds the distinction of being the only permanent gallery dedicated entirely to the work of Yayoi Kusama.
The Art of Advanced Reservations
To embark on this artistic journey, you’ll need to plan ahead and secure advanced online reservations. Tickets are a hot commodity, with most days fully booked. The mission of this museum is not to display Kusama’s most popular creations but rather to offer visitors a unique perspective on her artistic evolution. As someone who primarily knew Kusama through her mesmerizing “Infinity Mirrors,” stepping into her dedicated museum provided an invaluable perspective on the lifelong journey of this influential artist.
As exhibitions are constantly changing the museum is often closed for a month to make the changeover. These dates are well established online so if this is a must-do for your visit, check well in advance to ensure the museum will be open.
A Glimpse into Kusama’s World
The exhibitions at the Yayoi Kusama Museum are ever-changing, a testament to the dynamism of Kusama’s art. The catch, however, is that photography is prohibited on two of the four floors. While this might disappoint avid Instagrammers, the rule is rooted in preserving the integrity of the experience. One notable exception is the Infinity Room—a space where things seem to stretch into eternity. Here, you’re encouraged to capture the moment and immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Kusama.
You are never quite sure what art you might experience while visiting. Exhibitions rotate and focus on her entire career. The museum also hosts lectures and events focused on honoring Kusama’s achievements. Every exhibition features one infinity room, where photos are allowed, and one outdoor statue on the roof. This is not the place to visit though if you are only interested in her newer work.
A Worthwhile Visit for Art Enthusiasts
If you’re an ardent admirer of Kusama’s art and keen to delve deeper into her body of work, the Yayoi Kusama Museum in Tokyo is undoubtedly worth a visit. It’s an opportunity to trace the artistic footsteps of a true visionary. However, if your sole desire is to witness more recent works, this might not be the ideal destination for you. Nevertheless, a visit to this unique museum provides a meaningful insight into the life and artistry of Yayoi Kusama, an artist whose impact resonates far beyond the dots that made her famous.

I went with a lovely girl friend while the kids were in school and like most things there are just not many children around in Japan. That being said an older child that does well in an art museum would be fine here.
