Green Smoothies // Book Review

Green Smoothies, a product of Ten Speed Press, did not make me a smoothie addict. It’s 66 recipes and 7-day detox plan made this a comprehensive treatment of the subject but the book failed to change the paradigm in my kitchen. The recipes are easy to use. Each has pictures of the approximate amount of …

Kings Day in Delft

On April 27th, the Netherlands celebrates Kings Day wishing King Willem-Alexander a happy birthday. The holiday has a reputation for being one big crazy party, but my experience here in Delft was quite different. The reputation may hold true in Amsterdam, and perhaps even in the evenings in a student dominated town like Delft. The …

Exploring Den Haag Japanese Garden & Clingendael Park

Clingendael Park in Den Haag is home to a lovely Japanese Garden. This weekend marked opening weekend for the garden so we decided to pop over and check it out. The Japanese Garden is only open to the public about eight weeks each year in Spring and Fall, but it is worth the visit. This tranquil …

The Delft Windmill

One of the top questions I’m asked is about visiting windmills. A trip to Kinderdijk or Zaanse Schans are popular tourist stops, but there are one thousand working windmills all over Holland. One of my favorite little finds in Delft is the Delftse Molen. This windmill has been in Delft since 1679 but reopened its doors …

Flevoland Fun

We never miss an opportunity to tag along with Jeff on a work trip so we can see a new part of the Netherlands. Jeff was headed up to Flevoland, the area of the Netherlands created in 1986 by reclaiming land from the sea. While Jeff was in meetings we hung out in a nearby …

Me & Mine Linkup – April 2016

April is flower season in the Netherlands, so we snapped our family photo at Holland’s famous flower garden Keukenhof. We are also happy to announce that our family will be growing! A precious little boy will be joining us sometime in September.

Holland’s Flowers by Bike

It is flower season in the Netherlands! This weekend we packed up the car, complete with our bikes and headed to Keukenhof. On this visit we skipped the garden itself and instead paid the €6 to park the car and ride our bikes from there. There are plenty of other places to park your car …

Holland’s Flower Parade Float Viewing

Can you ever get enough of Holland’s Spring Flowers? We certainly don’t think so! My original plan was to drag the whole family out for the Bulbflower Parade. I knew I would love seeing the floats made up of Holland’s flowers and thought the kids might enjoy the festivities as well. The parade passes through …

Keukenhof Gardens: Seeing Holland’s Flowers

Its spring in the Netherlands which means Tulips and flowers galore! The most “traditional” way to see the flowers is a visit to Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse. If your here to see flower photos from our mid April 2016 visit you can check them out here. Keukenhof gardens are only open for two months each …

A Weekend in Brugge

Brugge is filled with canals, cobblestone streets and 17th century houses. If I didn’t know better I would have thought I was still in the Netherlands. Although Brugge is reachable by train, we decided to head by car and explore some of the surrounding areas as well. We stopped briefly in Bergen Op Zoom for …

The Ko’Olina Lagoons make the perfect water playgr The Ko’Olina Lagoons make the perfect water playground. The wave breaks create a calm area for ocean swimming with a sandy bottom. We like to put floats in on one side and make our way across the lagoon. The walking path along the lagoons is perfect for taking a stroll.

The only downside is the parking situation and the lack of affordable public parking.

The Bullship race was a great way to kick off race sailing. This for fun race does not take its self seriously. You compete for awards focused on being in the middle of the pack, coming in last and spending the most time capsized.

Thanks to the @pearlharboryachtclub for welcoming the boys and giving them a place to try new things and find an amazing group of friends.

We were lucky enough to come across this group of jellyfish. The current and tides bring them into the bay. The narrow opening makes it difficult to leave, so they end up in a smack!

We spent a lot of time in the wheelhouse with Captain Andy, even after years of sailing these waters, his breath was taken away.

Watching her appear outside the train window is one of those moments we’ll be talking about for a long time.
